A Note from Mr. Luley

Dear Parents,

Please plan to attend our Spring Band Concert on Thursday,  June 8th.  We have two presentations taking place, a new commission for the band and a presentation of the NBA’s National Blue Ribbon Award.

Our first is an exciting commission we are premiering with the band inspired by Jimmy Valvano, the former basketball coach of Rutgers University and coach of the 1983 National Championship basketball team at NC State.

We are dedicating the piece to our many families that have struggled and battled cancer. We wanted to have a piece of music written in their honor.  Jimmy V’s ESPY award speech from 1993 has always sat on my heart. We commissioned Rossano Galante, a film and band composer, to write us a piece of music based on his speech and his three principles of living a “full day,” laugh, think, and cry. Rossano was very inspired by the speech and has written us a beautiful and amazing piece. I have included a link to Jimmy Valvano’s speech:

The piece is titled “Victory”.  We are having the composer join us from LA to conduct the piece on the concert and share in the process with our students and audience. The concert is Thursday, June 8th at 7:30PM.

The second presentation will be of the National Band Association’s National Blue Ribbon Award.  We are one of only four high schools in the nation being presented this award this year and there have only been 13 schools recognized with this award in its four year history.

We hope you can come and share in this experience with our students.

Thank you,
Michael Luley
